Born in Philadelphia, August 3, 1932, Alvan A. Chaney Sr. was the youngest of three children born to Damon Newman Cheyney and Margaret Victoria Collins Cheyney. His brothers, Donald and Norwood, preceded him in death. His father remarried and his stepmother, Louise Chaney, begat four siblings: Adriel, Adella, Allegra, and Ariadne.

Alvan Sr. grew up in Marcus Hook and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended and graduated from John Bartram High School in 1950, where he lettered in Track and Field, and Fencing. He once said he didn't play basketball because his legs were skinny. (LOL)

After graduation, Alvan Sr. served dutifully and honorably for four years in the United States Navy. It was during this stint that he met Sara L. Travis of New London, Connecticut. They married April 1, 1956 and were graced with three sons: Alvan Allan Jr., Arthur Franklin, and Von Eric, all born in Philadelphia. Al (or Chris as he was also known) briefly attended the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed as an animal research technician at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland; and for more than twenty-five years, he worked as a research specialist in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 2007. He was opinionated, engaging, yet lived modestly and understated. Although not one typically to pick up the phone and call, he was always available to counsel, not to preach.

Alvan Sr. is also survived by a daughter, Stacey Chaney-Smith, seven grandchildren: Marielle, Simone, Curtis, Allan, Alison, Cassius, and TaShawn; nieces: Margaret and Antonia and nephews: Ruffin, Tyler, and Norwood Jr., and a slew of great nephews, nieces, and more.
