Rev. Florence J. Ball was born to the late Emma C. and the late Irving E. Johnson. She grew up in the Oak Street A. M. E. Church. She was educated in the Baltimore Public Schools. She went on to school of Cosmetology and earned her diploma while working with a licensed beautician. She received her practical nursing certificate from the St. Mary's Hospital.
Mrs. Ball was married to the late Rev. Benjamin F. Ball in 1944. She was a minister’s wife for 22 years in St. Mary's County. Rev. Ball was called to the pastorate of St. Luke Community Christian Church in Chester, PA. She served as the first lady for 25 years until his death, and even after his death, she was a lady of action and a diligent working member in St. Luke Church. She received her Elder's Orders in 1980 from U.C.C. Church Council. She was a member of the Sr. Choir, The Coleman Circle, Women’s Christian Service Council, Pastors Aid and advisor to the Youth Department and the B.F. Ball Youth Choir.
Mrs. Ball was a prominent member of St. Luke C. C. Church and a member of various organizations. She retired from the Young World Day Care in Claymont, De.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Benjamin F. Ball, her son, Kym Ball, her brothers, James, William, Harry and Irving Johnson and sisters Mary and Ethel Johnson. She leaves to mourn her loss, her daughter Diana B. Bey, sister Emma Wilson, her grandson, Derrick Howard, one granddaughter Shavon Ball, one great granddaughter Rickia Dallam, and adopted daughters Shakia Guy, and Ivory Freeman - Clark, adopted Goddaughter Chelsey Stanley, a special niece Constance Jordan, a special nephew Calvin Wilson, a spiritual daughter Delia Bowling, and a host of relatives and friends.
Sister Ball's sparkling smile and friendly manner radiated warmth to all who met her. She touched many lives on her life's journey. She enjoyed helping others and was always willing to serve. She always looked to the hills from whence cometh her help and strength. Her trust was truly in the Lord Jesus Christ who she never doubted.
One thing we know for sure about Mom Ball is that she loved her St. Luke family.
