Jesse Anthony "Tony" Rucker, Sr., the son of the late Cornelius and Jane Searles Rucker was born July 14, 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Tony was educated in the Philadelphia School System and graduated from Bok Vocational School. While attending Bok, he excelled at optical engineering, and later became employed by Chester Optical. After working several years for Chester Optical, in 1978 Tony began his own business in Chester, Tony Rucker and Sons. Prior to opening his business, he was the only African-American invited to learn how to surface and generate optical lenses at Coburn Manufacturing in Oklahoma. Tony was the first African-American optician to practice in Delaware County. As a buyer, he had a discerning and unique eye for trend-setting eyewear.

Tony had a charming personality and a captivating persona. He was a hobby chef who loved to entertain family and friends. Also, he was a luxury car owner and especially enjoyed his “Baby.” a convertible BMW M-3. He was a person who made friends wherever he went. As a father, he offered words of love, wisdom, guidance and support. He instilled values and morals in all of his children.

Tony met Andranette Harmon in February, 1970. They were meant for each other from the start. Tony always called Andranette “Miss A.” They were united in marriage on June 23, 1984. Altogether, Tony and Andranette shared 38 wonderful years. Tony adored all of his grandchildren and encouraged their future endeavors. Tony was grateful for the life that he lived. He had a full, blessed and prosperous life by the grace of God.

Tony was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Twin Oaks for many years. Before that he was an Elder at Thomas M. Thomas Presbyterian Church. Tony loved God and had great faith in Him and believed in God’s will for his life. Throughout his illness, Tony’s saying was “This is where the Lord wants me at this time.” He was called home to his eternal rest on November 7, 2009. He was predeceased by his brothers Albert and Gerald Rucker.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Andranette;children, Jesse Rucker Jr. (Leslye), Pilar Saunders, Jasone Rucker, Ronald Harmon, and Tyrone Eaddy; brothers, Carl and John Rucker; grandchildren, Imani Blango, Ronald Saunders Jr., Jaris Rucker, William Pierce, Tyrone Blango, Jamir Blango, Justin Rucker, and Nia Blango; great-grandson Aiden Blango; a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Tony’s memory shall also live in the heart of his life-long friend: David Johnson; special cousin, Kenny and JoAnn Barron; special friends, Olivia Brown-Johnson and Jackie Martin, and adopted sons, Pruitt Brown, Kyle Davis, Al Edmondson and Herbert Barron, Jr.
