William O. Thompson, son of the late Edward John Thompson and Queen Esther (Fitzgerald) Thompson was born June 10, 1935 in Woodlyn, Pennsylvania. He was called home to be with the Lord on August 27, 2009.
William was educated in the Ridley Township School District. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he received an Honorable Discharge in 1958. He was employed by North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company for many years and also the United States Postal Service for thirty-three years, retiring in 1993. Most recently, he was employed by the Rose Tree Media School District as a crossing guard at Olive Street and Baltimore Pike. He studied for four years at the Congress of Christian Education in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
William was married to the late Phyllis E. Thompson for thirty-three years and from that union they had four children. He then was united in marriage to Minnie Miller on July 12, 1997, and has been happily married for the past twelve years.
William accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Fairview, Woodlyn, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Usher Board, past chairman of the Trustee Board, and was ordained a Deacon of the church. Later he became a member of Second Baptist Church of Media, Pennsylvania, where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, past Church School Superintendent, member of the Male Chorus and Men’s Fellowship Ministry. He also was a member of the National Baptist Deacons Convention of America. He served as president of the State Chapter of the National Baptist Deacons Convention as well as treasurer of the local chapter of Chester and Vicinity Deacons Association. He was also a member of the Trustee Union of Chester and Vicinity.
William was a devoted family man, always there with love and guidance. He enjoyed every moment spent with his grandchildren. He took on the father role with many of his nieces and nephews. With his quick wit and mannerisms he always left you laughing.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory his beloved wife Minnie Thompson of Media; three sons, Kevin Thompson (Avalon) of Baltimore, Maryland, Matthew Thompson (Angela) of Media, and Jeffrey Thompson (Maxine) of Morton; two daughters, Wanda Scott (Dax) of Claymont, Delaware and Rita Miller of Media; one brother, Willie O. Thompson (Dorothy) of Chester; one sister-in-law, Connie Thompson of Wilmington, Delaware; fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
