Mary Agnes Lee-Carter, one of thirteen children, was born on November 25, 1913 in Farmville Virginia to the late John Peter Lee and Elinore Winston Lee. She departed this life peacefully on Thursday March 26, 2009 at Crozer Chester Medical Center with her family present. She received her education in the public schools of Farmville. She was baptized at an early age as a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
In 1935 she married the late Reverend Cleveland Carter and relocated to Chester Pennsylvania in 1950 and enjoyed 50 years of marriage until his death. To their union were born two children, Mack Louis and Dorothy Mae and a grandson who they reared, Kevin Alexander. Mary and Cleveland were one of the founding members of Zion Baptist Church while the church was worshiping on Central Avenue, Chester, Pennsylvania under the leadership of the late Reverend James A. Crawford. She later left with her husband who was founder and Pastor of Jones Tabernacle Holiness Church, Chester, Pennsylvania and Faith In Christ Holiness Church, Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania until his illness and death. She returned to Zion Baptist under the leadership of Reverend James Bishop. She was a faithful member of the Deaconess and served as a Missionary, sang in the Senior Choir, Female Chorus and was on the Pastor's Aide Committee.
"Grum-mom" as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren or "Mom Carter" by others, was unassuming and could fry some good chicken and she will always be remembered for her lovely hats she wore to church. She loved sitting on her porch waving to people as they drove by waving to her or honking their horns. Her favorite song was "Glory Glory Halleluiah, Since I Laid My Burdens Down"
She leaves to cherish many special memories: her devoted daughter Dorothy Raymond of Chester, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Easterine Berryman, Farmville Virginia, Martha Jane Ratcliff, New York and Virginia Folks, Richmond, Virginia; one daughter-in-law Delores Carter of Sharon Hill Pennsylvania; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; her devoted care giver Martha Howard and family; god-son David Brown and wife Dee, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Cleveland Carter and son, Mack L. Carter.
