James Clifford Culbreath was born on December 2, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up in North Philadelphia and was educated in the Philadelphia Public Schools. As a young man he was an active member of the BYPU of Means Temple Baptist Church and often joked that while the other kids were at Woodside Park he was participating in BYPU events.

In 1943 Jay, as he was effectionately known by all, met the love of his life, Nora Watkins of Palatka, Florida while she was visiting some cousins in Philadelphia. Jay was immediately smitten with this Southern Belle and often told the story to his older grandchildren that he cried like a baby when she went back to Florida.

The two were married in September 1944 and from their union four children, Annette, Gloria, James, Jr. and Cynthia were born.

Jay was employed by DeSoto Chemical Company for 39 years. After his retirement, he spent a great deal of time organizing various events for the Nile Swim Club. He was a sports enthusiast who embraced everything from football to hockey. Jay was an avid reader who maintained a book exchange with friends and neighbors. He was also a great lover of jazz and counted Cannonball Adderly, Miles Davis, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock and organist Jimmy Smith amoung his favorite artist.

Jay was a people person. He loved to meet new people and would strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He made everyone that he talked to feel special He was the proverbial good neighbor and very dedicated to the Yeadon community where he lived for over 46 years.

Later in life Jay became a master baker, blessing family and friends with his delectable pound cakes that he made on a weekly basis. If you let him know that you liked his treats he would often surprise you with a whole "Jay Cake" of your very own.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Nora, his children; Annnette Tatum, Gloria Chivers, James (Audrey) Culbreath, Jr, Cynthia (William) Rice; his grandchildren, Calvin (Lori), Deborah (Brett), Lucretia (Edward), James, III (Selena), Jason (Angela), Jessica and Jordan; great grandchildren, Damir, Jade, Clayton, Jessica, Zora, Shae, Eli and Imara.

Submited with Love,
The Family
